Skin Reaction To Gold

Clear coating Question: I have a 14K Yellow Gold 1/4 Carat t.w. Three-Stone Diamond Ring from Kay, and love it.

I got a 10K Yellow Gold Band from them as well.

My engagement ring has never bothered me, but the wedding ring makes my finger itch constantly.

I've noticed some smeared clear substance on the inside of my ring, and showed it to my husband. We bought some jewelry cleaner, hoping that would solve the problem, but it still itches.

My husband suggested that maybe they put some sort of a coating on the inside of the ring after we got it sized down, I was wondering if that's something jewelers do.

Gemologist and Valuer - David Foard F.G.A.A. Answer: G'day and many thanks for your query

Firstly there is no coating on the inside of any ring placed there by jewelers. There is no point as it would soon wear off.

What this sounds like to me is a slight allergy reaction to the metal in the 10K ring, as you say it is yellow gold.

The main clue is the gold quality. The 14K ring contains 585 parts per thousand of gold while the rest of the mix is usually mainly silver and a small amount of copper.

You 10K ring on the other hand - no pun intended ;-) contains a lot more copper - and I think this is what you are reacting to.

This is affectionately known as a 'Good Taste' reaction. ie: people with good taste and the desire for the better things in life, can't wear a lower quality gold - Nice, don't you think?

Better warn your husband it's going to cost more in the future. 14k minimum - 18k even better.

People who wear lower quality gold earrings get the same reaction. They can only wear fashion or silver earrings for a short while before they have to put good quality sleepers or studs back in the ear to stop any infection.

You are having a mild reaction the same way.

One last point - jewelers do sometimes plate over any repair area which makes it look a little shiney. This will soon wear off.

Hope this helps....

Gold Quality Hallmark

Gold Hallmark on Chain Question: Hi, I have just been given a 24" gold chain that is only stamped 777.

I can't see any other marks on it.

What does this stamp or hallmark mean?

Antique Jewelry Dealer - Ann Elizabeth DennisAnswer: Hi - Ann here, and many thanks for your query - and your patience.

Your 24" (inches) chain (60 cms) should be stamped somewhere near the clasp. In this case you say you can see 777.

Gold is expressed in two ways - 14K for example - which means it has 14 parts of pure gold - the rest is a mix of silver and copper etc. As pure gold is 24 carat they also express it as a decimal value in parts per thousand.

In a normal case 14K would be shown as 585 because there are 585 parts out of 1000 being pure gold (as above).

18 carat gold is marked in decimal as 750 or .750 but as your chain is stamped 777 I would suggest it is slightly above that figure of 18ct quality.

Best check with an eyeglass around the clasp again in case you missed a stamp.

Hope you find this information useful.

Mexican Silver HallmarksLittle Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks

Price: $24.45 USD

On the inside it is marked 14K PR and I was wondering what this might mean.

I have a friend who is 54, and his mother's wedding ring is similar, but there is no marks left in hers as it is very worn.

Any help appreciated, as I want to use this ring for my wedding ring in April.

Client asks – What is 9k on gold?

Please keep your questions coming so we can all share in the information.

QUESTION..?

I have a gold necklace that has been passed down to me and I am trying to find out what it is made of, there are no hallmarks on it but the lobster clasp has a tiny 9k stamped on to it.

Is it real gold? Can you help. Kind Regards

ANSWER..!

G'day and many thanks for your query

The 9K is the American - Asian - International Hallmark for 9 carat gold, but because it has a 'K' it shows it was NOT made in Great Britain or any of the British Colonies (such as Australia).

As I don't know where you live, I'm going to assume you are in the States, so this is normal.

In some countries they use 'K' for Karat (or carat) to differentiate between gold quality and gemstone weight - which confusingly is also a measurement in carats.

So 'K' or 'Kt' is for Karat Gold and 'c' or 'ct' is also for carat gold - while 'carats' is a weight measurment for gems.

Hope all this helps.
