The Bottom Line Of Our Worksheet

So here we are. Boy hasn’t that gone quickly?

It seemed like only a few years ago I started. Phew!

Time flies when you’re having a good time - or is that a ‘Fine’ time? In which case it’s worth ten percent more’ :-)

Because gemstones are such a complex subject and fully deserves a course on its own, we had to leave the Specific Gravity formulas for today.

In our example ring we only have two ‘Types’ of gemstone to worry about. A Diamond and a Sapphire, but as they are still in the mount, how can we estimate the carat weight of both?

We can use tables (such as those found at our website) which just uses the Diameter or distance across a gem to arrive at a weight. Your measurements must be in millimeters though (mm) so a metric ruler is a must.

You could use a set of pointers (compass) from a geometry set to measure the distance, or we could use a Hole Gauge (remember the Knitting Needle Gauge) and place it over a gem to get the diameter from that.

Try it.
