There are two distinct types…
The illustrations showing below all come from the turn of the century - items from the late Victorian periods through to circa 1901, although the styles and designs continued until the demise of the Pocket Watch.

This illustrated Standard 14 inch (35 - 36 cms) curb chain would have been worn on the Vest and is sometimes called a Vest Chain or Dickens Chain.
Worn on the waistcoat it would have a classic pocket watch on one side with possibly a Vesta or Sovereign case on the other end. The Medallion, Seal or Spinner would be showing. They do come in longer lengths.
Shorter Chains
Also known as ‘Safety Bicycle Vest Chains’
Only 7 inches in length, these are identified as a ‘Single’ chain, unlike the other style shown below.
